10/26/2010 Xbox 360 prisoners who escaped from prison, you may need Real Jailbreak An anonymous reader writes "Back in July, the Librarian of Congress officially made it legal to jailbreak your iPhone (or any phone). So why is it that the government is trying to prosecute Matthew Crippen for jailbreaking Xbox 360s? If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison, and lawyers are trying to prevent the author of a book about jailbreaking the original Xbox from testifying in Crippen's defense. What kind of law says it's okay to jailbreak the phone in your pocket, but not your gaming console?"

10/30/2010 Evil Dead iPhone game? GroovyEvil-dead-iphone-game-groovy-header

Massive, massive Evil Dead fan here. So much so that I have thoroughly enjoyed every Evil Dead game ever put out, despite knowing that some of them weren't really up to snuff. Thankfully, the next game based on the franchise is looking pretty neat, even if the trailer gives us no information on it other than its going to be pretty faithful to the original film and it's on iDevices.

That's actually pretty awesome in my opinion. The first film in the series often gets shadowed behind the subsequent two, which had Ash kicking ass and taking names with his boom stick. Plus, I can't wait to see how they handle a certain scene involving a tree and a woman's hoonanny. Not sure interactivity will really improve that... or get past the folks at Apple.

We got in touch with the guys behind it, who go by The Evil Dead App Team, but they are being tight lipped. All they would say is that it's coming out later this year, it is officially licensed, and that there will be plenty of gore.

10/14/2010 Pirates of the Caribbean RPG Action canceled

Disney confirms Propaganda "restructuring" led to shelving of Armada of the Damned; up to 100 layoffs reported.

The original Pirates of the Caribbean movie dealt with a crew of buccaneers suffering from an ancient curse. The upcoming action role-playing game Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned was to focus specifically on the origins of the curse and serve as a prequel of sorts to the film series.

Abandon ship!

Now it appears the game itself was cursed. Following online reports, Disney Interactive Studios confirmed the cancellation of Armada of the Damned, which was in development at Vancouver-based Propaganda Studios (Turok). The open-world title was scheduled to be released in early 2011 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, and it was to have a focus on exploration.

Unfortunately, the move sparked a wave of layoffs at Propaganda, "As a result of this decision, Disney Interactive Studios completed a restructuring of Propaganda Games, its Vancouver, BC internal studio, affecting one of the studio's two development teams," said Disney in statement. No number was given, but gaming blog Kotaku's tipsters put the total at nearly 100.

Disney was keen to point out that the layoffs had not affected Propaganda's other project. "The studio is still in active production of Tron: Evolution, the video game, which will be released on December 7, 2010, with additional DLC (downloadable content) support following the game's release," it said in a statement. The game will ship shortly before Disney's high-profile film Tron: Legacy debuts in theaters December 17.

Lost Online games from the era of pre-Web harrymcc writes "Long before the Web came along, people were playing online games — on BBSes, on services such as Prodigy and CompuServe, and elsewhere. Gaming historian Benj Edwards has rounded up a dozen RPGs, MUDs, and other fascinating curiosities from the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s — and the cool part is: they're all playable on the Web today." 10/08/2010 Warcraft movie pushed back - report

Director Sam Raimi Committed to Disney 'S forthcoming The Wizard of Oz film; movie based on Blizzard Entertainment's property on the back burner.

The World of Warcraft franchise has been a hot-ticket item for news this week. On Monday Blizzard Entertainment nailed down a December release date for the game's third expansion, Cataclysm. And yesterday the publisher announced that the World of Warcraft subscriber base has climbed to a new high of 12 million. Now, the franchise fans get some not so good news.

Raimi has chosen the Yellow Brick Road over Azeroth.

According to a Deadlinereport, the film in the Warcraft universe will not be released shortly. When confirmed director Sam Raimi dropped out of his directorial position on Spider-Man 4, many expected that would free up time for him to work on the Warcraft film. However, according to the report, that's not the case, and the director is instead working on Disney's Wizard of Oz reboot.

Announced in 2006, Electronic Entertainment Expo , the Warcraft project remains largely under wraps. Chief details known about the project include Raimi's involvement and that Legendary Pictures, the production company behind The Dark Knightand in the development process Gears of War The film, landed the project. Warner Bros. planned to distribute.

The most recent mention

"We're still working on the story," Raimi said in June. "We have a 40-page document that needs a lot more work'we're finding the characters and through the characters we're finding the story'we're trying to create realistic characters that can live in the world of Warcraft, as though you were in the game itself."

In October 2009, Raimi revealed that Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot screenwriter Robert Rodat was on board with the project. The Internet Movie Database is listing the film as arriving in 2012, but no official date has been released by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, the companies distributing and producing the film.

Raimi is the director of the multibillion-dollar-grossing Spider-Man films and the horror cult classics Evil Dead and Army of Darkness . His most recent effort was the recent Drag Me to HellHorror thriller, which won critical acclaim despite a PG-13 rating and so-so box-office returns. The Warcraft film will be produced by Atlas Entertainment's Charles "Chuck" Roven, Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull, and Raimi producing partner Joshua Donen. Blizzard Entertainment's senior vice president of creative development Chris Metzen will coproduce.

10/06/2010 Dead Rising Mobile, Capcom virtual arcade coming to iPhone
Capcom's not looking to break its habit of scrunching down its popular franchises for use on the iPhone, it seems. Capcom Japan today outlined its mobile gaming plans for the near future -- plans which include the winter release of Dead Rising Mobile and "Capcom Arcade," a storefront which will host an expanding library of the developer's classic titles.

Dead Rising Mobilewill be 3D-shooter in the spirit of the series 'console iterations with some form of Facebook and Twitter functionality. Capcom Arcade, as well as Xbox Live Games Room , will host a number of virtual arcade cabinets that require purchased "tokens" to play. Alternatively, permanent access to each game can be had for a larger, one-time fee. The Arcade service will launch before Dead Rising Mobile and will feature Street Fighter II, Ghouls'n Ghosts, 1942 and Commando.

Finally, Capcom is also planning another update for the iPhone versionof Street Fighter IV in mid-to-late November. The update will include a new challenger (following the last update's introduction of E. Hondaand C. Viper ), in addition to a handful of new networking options. We can't wait to see which brawler we can put our thumbs on next! That ... didn't sound good.

08/11/2010 Study: 2010 MMORPG Market To Reach $8 Billion

The worldwide massively multiplayer online role-playing game market will grow to $8 billion in 2010 thanks mostly in part to Asian online game companies, according to a new study by Strategy Analytics Digital Media. Its $8 billion forecast is an approximately 60 percent increase compared to the firm's $5-plus-billion estimate for the global MMORPG market in 2009. That $5 billion represents a 17 percent growth over 2008's amount, which Strategy Analytics attributed primarily to "the ...

09/22/2010 Pokemon Black, White sell 2.6 million in Japan

Enterbrain reports Nintendo 'S latest must-catch-\\' Em-RPG of all sets franchise record with a double platinum-plus first week sales.

Nintendo 'S Pokemon franchise can be considered an enduring worldwide phenomenon, but nowhere is that more true than in his native Japan. Case in point, Famitsu Publisher Enterbrain reports that late payments in the double release of the franchise, Pokemon Black and White Pokemon, have teamed up to set a new first week sales record for the franchise after their release in Japan on September 18.

Once a noble breed, Pokemon have been hunted to near extinction.

As relayed by gaming blog Andria Sang, Pokemon Black and White logged opening-week sales of 2,637,285 units, according to Enterbrain's initial estimates. That figure easily bested 2006's Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, which sold 1,586,360 units during their first week at retail.

Pokemon Black and White introduce a handful of changes to the established gotta-catch-'em-all formula. Developer Game Freak has expanded the game's online functionality through features such as Global Link, where players can access special content by uploading their save files to a Web site. Black and White also introduce more than 150 new Pokemon that players can add to their Pokedexes.

With regard to the double titles, Nintendo has traditionally releases nearly identical editions in the same game Pokemon for a few different names, encouraging players to exchange the captured monsters between versions.
