08/25/2010 More Devs Going Indie, To Gamers' Benefit Wired is running a feature about how a growing number of game developers are abandoning jobs at major publishers and studios and taking their experience to the indie scene instead. Quoting: "They're veterans of the triple-A game biz with decades of experience behind them. They've worked for the biggest companies and had a hand in some of the industry's biggest blockbusters. They could work on anything, but they've found creative fulfillment splitting off into a tiny crew and doing their own thing. They're using everything they've learned working on big-budget epics and applying it to small, downloadable games. The good news for gamers is that, as the industry's top talents depart the big studios and go into business for themselves, players are being treated to a new class of indie game. They're smaller and carry cheaper price tags, but they're produced by industry veterans instead of thrown together by B teams and interns. Most importantly, unlike big-budget games that need to appeal to the lowest common denominator to turn a profit, these indie gems reveal the undiluted creative vision of their makers."

08/27/2010 Target Ramps Up Used Games Business

Target is getting serious about the used games market today, with the rollout of in-store trade-ins at select retail outlets in California. The trade-in program launches today in Northern California, with plans to expand it next month at more Target locations. By year's end Target hopes to offer trade-ins at over 850 stores nationwide. In addition to the in-store trade-ins, consumers will also be able to go to the Target website to trade-in used electronics and DVDs as well - for store credit. Apparently, you'll also be able to trade in select electronics too like iPhones and cellphones.

06/15/2010 E3 10: Golden Sun: Dark Dawn rises this holiday

E3 10: Golden Sun: Dark Dawn rises this holiday screenshot

Golden Sun was one of the best JRPGs for the Game Boy Advance, and a pretty great one all around. And now there's a Golden Sun game for the DS, newly subtitled as Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.

It's pretty impressive from what's seen so far, and also a little bit traditional. Turn-based combat, towns, dungeons, and all those things people thought modern JRPGs were trying their best to kill off. There's a cool cell-shaded look about the whole thing, as well as some obligatory touch mechanics for puzzle-solving.

Expect to see it this holiday!

07/16/2010 Atelier Rorona trailer mixes magic

It's the ultimate irony. You're a massive fan of JRPGs, but you don't like reading. Due to your freak tastes, you don't want to read my previewUpcoming NIS America / puff name Altelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland. Which is weird, because if there was ever a genre that forced reading, it would be Japanese Role Playing Games, the genre defined by exposition. You are a freak.

So what can we do? Well, I 'd recommend you view the clip above. This magical and unpretentious story about the 14-year-old girl in a mini-skirt working to save his store. Pip pip!

07/12/2010 EA will be revealing a Spore RPG at Comic-Con

EA will be revealing a Spore RPG at Comic-Con screenshot

We all know that Activision is the bad guy now and Electronic Arts is all awesome and cool these days, but that doesn't mean that it won't be whoring out a popular franchise as much as it can. Never doubt that EA is a business, and its next move in franchise spreading is evidently going to be an RPG based in the Spore Universe.

The reveal slipped out via Comic-Con's show schedulewhere this description ran:

6:00-7:00 Video Game Reveal: Maxis Studio— Maxis Studio (The Simsand Sporevideo games) has recently announced its next project, a new, Sci-Fi-RPG action based on DNA Spore. Join key leads from the dev team, Thomas VuPaul Sottosanti and Lauren McHugh, for the first game reveal to the public! Room 3

Now don't get me wrong; as long as this is a good game that actually has something to do with Spore, the Spore name can be smeared all over it like cream cheese on a bagel. In fact I'm kind of hoping that this is the hinted at Darkspore. We will find out more soon as Comic-Con approaches quickly and Dtoid will be there.

08/24/2010 Co-op Neverwinter RPG Announced For 2011 Atari and Cryptic Studios are teaming up to make a new Dungeons & Dragons-based RPG called Neverwinter, planned for Q4 2011. Gameplay will center on five-person groups that can include other players and/or AI allies, and there will be an extensive content generation system. Gamespot spoke with Cryptic CEO Jack Emmert, who explained parts of the game in more depth: "I think there are two very unique gameplay elements in 4th Edition that we've done something interesting with: action points and healing surges. In the tabletop game, an action point lets a player perform a reroll or add an additional die to a roll. In our game, action points are earned through combat and spent to power special abilities called 'boons.' These boons give players special boosts, but only in certain circumstances. Healing surges represent the amount of times a player can heal himself before resting. In D&D and Neverwinter, various abilities let players use a surge immediately or perhaps replenish the number of surges available. It's a precious resource that players will need to husband as they adventure in the brave new world. Positioning, flanking, tactics, and using powers with your teammates are also all things that come from the 4th Edition that are interesting. Of course, we're using power names and trying to keep power behavior consistent with the pen-and-paper counterparts. Neverwinter will definitely feel familiar to anyone who has played the 4th Edition."

08/24/2010 Torchlight 3 out before Diablo 3, Runic CEO hypothesizes
Runic Games CEO Max Schaefer respectfully believes that a third Torchlight game could be out before Blizzard's Diablo 3 -- a joke we'd made when the second TorchlightIt was recently announced . The executive tells us that the efficient size of the Runic team, which has a corporate goal to never grow above 40, would have the ability to get out another significantly upgraded sequel before Blizzard's behemoth arrived. Torchlight and its sequel have both had brisk development cycles lasting less than a year.

Schaefer told us, "[Blizzard has] an impossible task. Blizzard can not get away with doing a Torchlight 1. If they put out a single player game, an RPG that's kinda stripped down for $20, people would say, 'What the hell happened to Blizzard?' They don't have that luxury. Everything has to be super epic. More epic than anything that's come before, more epic than World Of Warcraft . They should do it. This puts them in a very tight spot, I do not envy t 'them. It must be perfect. "

Given his deadpan delivery on the subject, we wanted to make sure he was serious about Torchlight's third installment beating the Blizzard behemoth to market, "I really think we will, I'm not joking about it. I'll be the first to buy Diablo 3, I'm a huge fan. I just know what it's like over there."

07/22/2010 Recettear: "Story item shop Localized An anonymous reader writes "An indie-produced item-shop-sim-slash-RPG, Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale, has been localized and a demo released by the equally indie startup Carpe Fulgur LLC. The game is equal parts item shop sim (as in, item shop like the kind you find in every RPG ever, except you're behind the counter now) with certain Zelda- or Diablo-esque elements also present in the form of randomly-generated dungeons that you can grab an adventurer friend to go tromping through for loot to sell. The response so far has been pretty positive and it seems like Carpe Fulgur is trying to make a business of taking (non-pornographic) unique indie titles from Japan and getting them into a state where the rest of the world can enjoy them."
